What is CoolLipo?
Cool Lipo (laser-assisted lipolysis) is a minimally invasive laser-based procedure that dissolves lipid cells (fat cells) for easy removal from affected body areas. These areas include regions of the neck, chin, jowls or other areas of the body that have loose skin such as under the arms.
CoolLipo ® laser system provides a unique laser wavelength, which contracts collagen (connective tissue) and tightens the skin. This tightening of the skin is an effect that is not a traditional result from standard liposuction treatment
How does CoolLipo work?
The CoolLipo surgical procedure is performed by a board certified physician who uses a laser fibered cannulus (hand-piece) to direct the laser light source under the skin. This targets the affected area where the lipid removal is to be performed. The laser light source dissolves the unnecessary lipid cells allowing for a greater removal of tissue than most conventional liposuction techniques.
Variable laser settings allow the physician to target laser energy to several layers of skin, causing the tissue to shrink and simultaneously stimulates the renewal of new collagen production. This new production of collagen and the resulting side effect of skin tightening may continue for several months after the actual procedure.
What kind of anesthesia does the CoolLipo surgical procedure require?
The Cool Lipo procedure is performed as an out-patient procedure under local anesthesia. Thus unless the specific situation calls for it, the physician will not use general anesthesia, which substantially reduces the risks involved.
The various options for anesthesia during this procedure must be discussed with the practicing physician during the course of the consultation.
How much pain is to be expected resulting from the CoolLipo procedure?
Typically, there is either no pain or minimal pain caused by the CoolLipo procedure. The physician will use a Tumescent (Klein Solution), which is injected under the skin to eliminate the sensation of pain.
What is the Tumescent or Klein solution that is used during the CoolLipo procedure?
The Klein (Tumescent) Solution is a formula of sterile salt water, adrenaline (a natural human hormone that reduces bleeding), lidocaine (a topical numbing medication) and bicarbonate used to reduce the acidity that can accompany an intraveneous (IV) application.
This solution is specifically developed to “swell” the lipid tissue allowing easier penetration of the cannulus, which reduces trauma to the lipid cells thereby reducing bleeding, pain and other associated complications that typically accompany traditional liposuction procedures.
How long does the CoolLipo surgical procedure take?
Although procedure times are variable and are determined on a case-by-case basis, it is typical for the procedure to last from one to three hours.
What is the recovery period after the CoolLipo procedure?
The recovery period after any surgical procedure is determined on a case-by case basis. This is because the treated area is typically wrapped with a compression dressing, which should be worn and changed at the discretion and the advisement of the practicing physician. Some patients may return to their normal routine as soon as the next day others may heal more slowly.
What side effects are associatd with the CoolLipo procedure?
The side effects of the Cool Lipo procedure are variable on a case-by-case basis. Each patient will experience a different degree of swelling and bruising, which is determined by a number of factors including age, health and the region of the body that the procedure is being performed upon.
This is not an exhaustive list of side effects and a thorough discussion between the patient and physician should occur to discuss side effects.
How long will it take to see results from the CoolLipo procedure?
Typically, optimal results reveal themselves approximately six months after the procedure. The results are variable from patient to patient and the exact response time of the body to heal post procedure is best determined by the practicing physician.
Who are the optimum candidates for the CoolLipo procedure?
Candidacy for the CoolLipo procedure is a determination made by the practicing physician. There are a significant number of factors that must be considered for each patient including age, health factors, diet and family history that must be addressed for any patient that is considering undergoing the CoolLipo surgical procedure.
Is the CoolLipo surgical procedure approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration?
The CoolLipo Laser-Assisted Lipolysis system was approved by the FDA, in January of 2008 for use in the field of dermatological surgery.
What is the cost of the CoolLipo surgical procedure?
The Cool Lipo procedure varies in cost based on the location of the cosmetic surgeon, the skill level of the cosmetic surgeon, the specific circumstances surrounding performing the surgical procedure and the associated costs that result from the procedure such as lab fees, anethesiologist fees, hospital fees etc.
Typically, this procedure may cost anywhere between $2,000-$8,000. The exact cost of any medical procedure is determined on a case-by-case basis.
