Colon cancer is a leading killer in the United States as well as in other parts of the world. Certain things can be done to prevent the development and spread of colon cancer (such as getting regular virtual colonoscopy screening) but there are certain factors that appear to make it more likely that you'll die of this disease. Thos factors include age, ethnicity and sex.
In particular, there has been new information uncovered which seems to indicate that female hormones are effective in saving off the spread of the disease. In comparison with men, women who are pre-menopausal are much more likely to survive longer but those who are post-menopausal are much more likely to die quickly as a result of the disease.
This suggests that there may be the possibility in the future of preventing the disease through the use of hormone replacement therapy for women. This will require additional studies into the actual impact of female hormones on the disease but it's an area that should cetainly be explored due to the gravity and breadth of the disease.
Question of the Day: What causes female hormones to make death from colon cancer less likely?
