If you have children or grandchildren who are in their teens, you might find it amusing to see how consumed they are with their own appearance. You might even be the one to reassure them that no one will notice the zit on their forehead or to let them know that their acne will clear up in a few short years and they'll be rid of it forever. Then one day you'll wake up with a big blemish of your own and you'll be tossed right back into those self-conscious days that they're embroiled in right now. That's because acne is something that is cause by hormonal changes and many adults will have to deal with it long after they thought it was a thing of their past.
Both men and women may experience acne for a short period of time as they go through the hormonal changes (menopause or andropause) that accompany aging. In general, the acne breakouts should be limited in both intensity and duration in comparison with that which you experienced in your teens. However, some people do experience significant adult acne during this time of change and may even seek the assistance of a dermatologist to aid them in getting through the period quickly.
Question of the Day: Did you realize that one of the side effects of aging was acne?
