In order to actively allow for life extension as we move forward into the future, we have to gain an even better medical understanding of the human body than that which we currently have. One study has made some headway in this area by identifying a hormone in the body that could hold the key to extending life for aging men.
The hormone is called insulin-growth factor 1 (better known as IGF-1). It has been found that men who have higher levels of this hormone in their bodies are expected to live longer than their male counterparts who have lower levels of the hormone. Furthermore, the risk of problems with heart disease is lower in men with high levels of the hormone which helps reduce the likelihood of death from this leading killer.
It is not yet known what this will mean for the future of medicine and life extension. These are early studies wihch simply suggest that there could be a link to extending life through further review of the role that this hormone plays in the body (and ultimately the use of a synthetic version of the hormone to prolong life). However, this is a step towards the goal of living longer as a community.
