One of the areas of anti-aging that many people are interested in is cognitive enhancement. We joke about the fact that we lose memory as we get older (buying T-shirts and coffee mugs that say "of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most) but the reality is that it's a very serious - and frightening - experience. None of us wants to watch our minds go so we're interested in the methods that are available to prevent that mental deterioration.
A new study shows that mild cognitive impairment affects both men and women but that men may have more reason to be concerned about the issue than their female counterparts. According to the research, men are one and a half times more likely than women to experience mild cognitive impairment as they age. There seem to be no external factors (such as education) that impact this but it is not known yet why the problem is more prevalent among men.
Aging of the mind is a scary thing so we need all of the information that we can get to help understand and prevent that problem for future generations. This study is one more step along the path to our enhanced understanding.
Question of the Day: What is your theory as to why men are more likely than women to need cognitive enhancement in their older years?
