Klotho: The Next Fountain of Youth

If you're looking for the next "fountain of youth", you might want to look no further than your own genes. Specifically, you should be looking at the gene Klotho, which was discovered by Japanese medical researchers approximately ten years ago. In the decade that has passed since that time, further research has indicated that there is a strong possibility that Klotho is an anti-aging hormone. Recent research has provided additional insight into how the power of Klotho may be harnessed to offer anti-aging opportunities to everyone.

The new research links Klotho with insulin levels to give medical researchers a better understanding of how Klotho works within the body. What was known in the past was that the presence of Klotho is linked with anti-aging. What is known as a result of the new research is that the way in which Klotho limits aging in the body is directly linked to its interference with insulin. (You can get all of the details of the study from the full article here.)

The hope is that this research will spawn additional research linking sugar metabolism and Klotho. Ultimately, this could perhaps lead to the development of an anti-aging technique which combines knowledge of the two areas of the body. This research will take time to come about but since it's only been a scant ten years since Klotho was discovered, researchers seem to be well on their way to making use of this knowledge. Ultimately, it could mean that Klotho could be utilized for life extension.

Question of the Day: When was the first time that you heard about Klotho?
